Foliage ~ Plant new evergreens and conifers - remove existing evergrens and conifers ~ Use as windbreaks or to screen eyesores Lawns ~ While the weather is fine get the lawn into good shape for the winter ~ Apply a moss killer and / or an autumn feed, if required ~ Rake with a spring rake or scarifier for larger lawns

 

October

Protect wood ~ Now is the time to check out all wooden structures ~ Repair and protect before winter winds do any damage ~ Check out fence panels and posts ~ Secure, replace, paint as necessary ~ Note - wood that is in contact with the ground will rot first Fallen leaves ~ Clear away fallen leaves from paths, steps and walkways as they become slippery when wet ~ Lawns, flowerbeds and rockeries need to be kept clear to keep them healthy ~ Fill a black bin liner full of damp leaves, punch in a few holes, and store in an out of the way place to create next years leaf mold to use as a soil improver ~ Check out gutters and pipes

Tulips ~ If you didn't get round to buying tulip bulbs in the autumn, buy now as they are often reduced ~ Make sure that the bulbs are intact, firm and not shivelled and they should do well ~ Plant in a sunny spot in well drained soil or in containers of compost Lawn ~ Keep lawn clear of leaves ~ Mow only when necessary ~ Keep off when muddy or frozen
